  • Can I join if I’m not a fresher?
    • Absolutely! We have events throughout the year so there’s always something you can get involved in. Just come along to any of our rehearsals or drop us a note with any questions, (you can contact us at president@brassoc.com or through any of the social media pages
  • I don’t have an instrument at uni but have played before – can I still be in the band?
    • As a society, we’re lucky enough to have some instruments which our members can borrow for free. Just let us know and we can sort you out with one.
  • I don’t know anything about music, do you start from the basics?
    • Our beginners group is perfect for anyone who has never played music before. Our dedicated coordinators and mentors can get you set up with instruments and teach you how to play from scratch as well as helping you play in a group ensemble with other beginners.
  • Do you teach how to read music?
    • Within the Beginners group, we have a mentoring system where you’ll get one-to-one tuition from another member. They can teach you right from the start, including how to read music.
  • When do you rehearse?
    • Our Beginners group rehearses on a Wednesday at 3 pm, followed by our intermediates group. Our main brass band rehearses on a Wednesday from 5-7:30pm and Symphonic Brass rehearses on a Friday 5-7:30pm
  • What does it cost to join?
    • Membership of Brass Society is just £4 per year. Although you don’t need to be an official member to play in our ensembles, purchasing membership allows you to vote in society elections, travel in Warwick SU travel, and buy society merchandise. All of the the membership fees come back to us, so becoming a member helps us to buy new music, book great concert venues and improve the society for you!
  • How much of a time commitment is it?
    • You can be involved as much or as little as you want. The majority of our members rehearse every week and are keen to be involved in events such as weekends away and socials, but it is up to you.(For some events, such as contests and concerts, extra commitment to rehearsals will be required for those wanting to be involved.)
  • Do I have to audition?
    • The only ensemble that is auditioned is our Symphonic brass ensemble however the first rehearsal of the term is open to everyone who’s interested. Auditions will be held near the beginning of term 1.
  • What is UniBrass?
    • UniBrass is the one and only UK universities brass band competition! Warwick hosted the competition in the years 2014-16 and are avid competitors. In the 2020 year, our theme was classic games. We played multiple pieces related to classic games from the 80’s; such as Tetris, Street Fighter and brassteroids.
